A Little Background to the Mountain Goat People

Pilalt indigenous people from the village at Cheam are called “the mountain goat people” because of an ancestral teaching and the right to hunt the animals passed down in certain families. One of the most prominent mountains along the Fraser River is Mount Cheam, which marks the Pilalt Territory of the Cheam people.

This small community has a long history of protest actions against the encroachment of their
Aboriginal Title and Rights by fishing, logging and development. The Cheam Indian Band is one of 30 First Nations communities in the lower Fraser watershed many of which are part of the Sto:lo Nation.

Using Theatre of the Oppressed and Invisible Theatre techniques, I wish to explore with your help a possible understanding that can be channelized from “person/performer” to pedestrian; a possibility that can become transcendental and awake in those involved a notion of solidarity between witness and the persons manifesting a personal or social concern.

A few typos for December!

A few changes to the December Calendar.

1. Thursday, Dec. 10, 7:00pm: Film and Info Night

The film to be shown is not “Guerrilla Girl,” but “A Jail in Colombia.” Description: A look inside the La Modelo prison in Bogota. Colombia. Called a “model” prison by Colombia officials the prison in reality is controlled more by the prisoners than the guards. The prison is controlled by three criminal groups: members of the guerrilla movement, paramilitary forces, and cocaine traffickers. They have broken the prison up into three different territories and each group has it’s own security forces, defending it’s own territory.

2. Friday, Dec. 11, 7:00pm: Defending the Land!

The speaker this evening is Denise Douglas, not Denise Denis. Our sincere apologies to Denise.

November Wrap-up – Deported

Hi All,

This week, one member of our small collective, was deported from Vancouver to the United States.  Although supposedly arrested for “overstay in Canada,” this kidnapping was clearly targeted.  This deportation is a result of increasing social control around the Olympics, as this person was recently threatened by members of Vancouver Integrated Security Unit, the overseers of Olympic security. (see article, How Much Does An Anarchist Cost?)

On October 15th, 1284 E12th hosted an anti-olympics film night.  Since then there has been a marked increase of surveillance and harassment in our lives.

The police are trying to isolate and intimidate anyone involved with anything that disturbs their social order.  This tactic can be successful unless we act to strengthen and forge ties of real solidarity.

And so, we continue to host events and projects self-organized resistance and invite you to do the same.  That said, “Proposal’s Night” this month is the 16th of December (7-9pm). a note re: proposals.  Also, The December Calendar will be out over the next few days, so please check back in.

Since borders are like prison walls, are we all living in some kind of prison?

How Much Does An Anarchist Cost? Repression and Resistance to the Torch Relay

In the week leading up to the Olympic Torch Relay kick-off in Victoria, numerous people, who oppose the Olympics, were harassed by RCMP officers of the Vancouver 2010 Joint Intelligence Group (JIG) – an arm of Olympic Security. We believe that it is likely the 2010 JIG be moving with the Torch Relay and will use much of the same tactics as were used in Vancouver and Victoria to repress Torch Relay resistance across so-called Canada.
