12th and Clark vs. The City

December 12, 2010

Urgent Appeal for Funds

Greetings from 12thand Clark,

It’s been a little over a year since 12th and Clark first opened its doors in September, 2009.  The space is for people to present and exchange ideas and promote anarchism/y in a face to face manner; reaching beyond the confines of social circles.  Carving out this space is important to further our struggles and develop relationships that challenge state control and capitalism.

In September 2010, the roll down of the space was painted to say, “Class War 604”. This triumphant blemish on the city’s landscape seemed to attract the attention of city bureaucrats, who around that time began harassing 12thand Clark. We’ve been told we’re in violation of bylaws and that we must apply for a new commercial license. Because of the sluggish convolution that is bureaucracy, the deadline for this application has already past and the space could be shut down at any moment.

The licensing process will cost $648.00 – not only a daunting sum of money, but even more so in the short time or literally no time we have to raise it.

This world sets us all up for precariousness, but when we support each other and support our desires, we are a little farther from the domination of survival over life. The engagement and passion that is contributed by people who come by the space is what keeps it alive, not the rent we put together each month. Unfortunately, until we live in a world with only the distant memory of bosses, landlords, judges and pigs, we must also financially justify our existence and we ask for your contribution in this as well.
